1.0 Introduction
CQSS is a game (simulation). It is a simulation of the ARRL
Sweepstakes contest (in November 1968) for a station located in
Maryland (G3ZCZ/W3). It incorporates a propagation model so that
the contacts on any band at any time of the day will be
relatively realistic. The premise behind the simulation and the
program itself are described in chapter 5 of the book. This
version is a later version than the listing given in the Book
(Figure 5-28). If you don't have a copy of the book, load the
program, set the CAPS LOCK key to CAPS, and follow the
instructions to initialize the game.
2.0 Loading the game
When you type 'CQSS' followed by the 'Enter' key, you will have
to wait a few moments while 3000 calls are loaded from the file
"CQSS.SS" before the game starts.

4.0 Playing the game.
As you play the game, status information will update. Each time
you work a new Section, it will be removed from the Section
Display. The 'Contest' time, elapsed time, your score and the
Duplicate and Lid count will update. The contest time is the
time of day (faster than and not quite real time). Elapsed time
is (contest) time you have actually spent operating. Your score
is a multiple of twice the number of contacts multiplied by the
number of sections worked. The duplicate count is the number of
times you have tried to log a duplicate contact, and the lid
count is the number of times you have tried to log a QSO with
incomplete data, or tried to complete (log) a QSO without sending
information to the other station.
5.0 Files in the Package
The following files are associated with the CQSS package.
5.1 The CQSS.EXE File
This file is the executable file compiled using Borland's
Turbo Basic Compiler.
5.2 The CQSS.BAS File
This file is the original BASIC source language file from
the book, and needs GWBASIC or the BASIC interpreter to run.
5.3 The CQSS.TB File
This file is the modified source language file in Turbo
Basic.
5.4 The CQSS.SS File
This file contains the call/color customization information
as well as 3000 calls and section numbers. Use an ASCII non
document mode editor to replace the "G3ZCZ" in the first
line to yourcall in double quotation marks. to customize the
colors, you will first have to view the colors using the
Color Command, and then scan the CQSS.TB listing to check
the order that the colors are read off the file, and change
them accordingly.

Verify that your call is not in the list. The list of calls
was generated by a random call generator, and there is no
intentional insertion of any callsign. If you wish it, you
may replace any one or more call sign with one of your own
choice (friends, foes, etc.)
5.4 The CQSS.DAT File
This file is the default name for saving the sate of the
game. You may choose any name you want instead, when
exercising the 'Save' and 'Restore' commands.
5.5 The CQSS.DOC File
This file is the documentation file that you have just read.
